WRIHA helps young disabled children enjoy a better quality of life

Children with motor disabilities overcome numerous obstacles in their daily life. One of them is the tedious rehabilitation activities which are so complex and specific that there is no real solution on the market.
This is the case for Sarah a five-year old child who was born with cerebral palsy. Sarah cannot speak clearly catch objects or stand up right. She needs constant assistance and daily participation in tedious physical therapy sessions in a Secialised Centre.
Improving the quality of life of young disabled children was Mauricio Ortíz’s main reason for starting the WRIHA project.
Mauricio is  a Colombian engineer who was leading a research project in cerebral palsy in Bogotá in 2007. One year later, he flew to France to pursue his research at INSA, Toulouse.
Through his research he has found that the most common problems encountered by the children with motor disabilities relate to upper limb rehabilitations (gripping abilities).

Acknowledging the importance of the upper limb movements in daily life activities, he decided to concentrate his efforts on developing new life-improving solutions: a technology designed to make therapy funny and which can be used at home. His research materialised in a patented medical device which focuses on wrist rehabilitation.
Based on biomechanical and social sciences studies and using animal shapes and colours the wrist device became a creative solution to turn a tedious process into a joyful activity.
WRIHA became an innovative startup in 2012. To commercialise and distribute his medical equipment Mauricio decided to participate in the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs and went to Germany the first largest European medical device market.

Thanks to this stay abroad he made new commercial relations and sold the wrist rehabilitation device abroad. He also signed an agreement and made the device available to 150 disabled children and their families.
The children experienced improvements from the very first use several Specialised Centres have been equipped and some letters of intent were signed.
Today Mauricio is still a very active entrepreneur and has just launched a crowdfunding campaign of the WRIHA project. The idea is to improve the autonomy of children with motor disability.
This campaign which is organised from January to February 2016 is made in partnership with ‘’Hôpital des Enfants du CHU de Toulouse’.
