New tourism opportunities are not only found in our home countries and among experienced tourism experts. Young foreign entrepreneurs, like Juan Lopez Dominguez, can also contribute with their energy and fresh ideas to new perspectives and innovative projects in tourism industry.

Period of exchange: 10/2010 until 12/2010
Duration of exchange: 2 months

Host entrepreneur Dejan Križaj is an initiator of a project called Bank of Tourism Potentials in Slovenia ( The main goal of BTPS is to connect various actors in the field of tourism and to spur innovation in Slovenian tourism. Through this web-based community, various tourism stakeholders can be reached. The idea was to help a young entrepreneur, Juan Lopez from Spain, to open his own tourist agency by initially spending some time with him in order to prepare a business plan as well as to learn the basics regarding tourism. Juan had the opportunity to visit interested parties, stayed with them and learned from them. These host organizations were identified through BTPS (by publishing news, encouraging cooperation, contacting most proactive stakeholders). Both parties agreed with the proposed work mechanism in advance.

Juan Lopez had a previous experience in real-estate business but none in tourism. The first step was to introduce NE to tourism industry (by studying various material, web pages and more specific innovation in tourism since this is the HE’s specialisiation area) and secondly, to help him write a business plan. What followed was a month and a half spent with various organizations, from tourism facilities, such as hotels and tourist agencies, to tourist associations bringing together enthusiasts and various individuals. Those organizations hosted Juan from one day to one week. He had the opportunity to experience real-life tourism business and explore Slovenia. His impressions were recorded in a blog where he regularly publishes: His visits were coordinated by HE through Bank of Tourism Potentials.

During his stay, NE met many tourism professionals and volunteers working in this field. He actively worked in two tourist agencies where he learnt some basic skills. He gathered numerous contacts of potential partners from Slovenia and he also established communication with a few Spanish agencies that can potentially collaborate with agencies in Slovenia. He also had the opportunity to explore Slovenia and surrounding countries from business and from tourist point of view. He learnt a lot about tourism through various newsletters, attendance of a conference on social entrepreneurship and about Slovenian Innovation Forum where he actively participated. HE enjoyed working with NE, helping him explore the tourism field, introducing him to various tourism concepts, guiding him and helping him establish contacts with Slovenian tourism organisations. HE believes that the exchange was useful for both parties involved as well as for Slovenian tourism sector in general.
